This Belgian Medal of the Armed Resistance 1940–1945 was awarded to people who were part of the resistance. It is recognised by the inscription "1940 RESISTERE 1945". On the other side is an allegorical image of a woman with her arm across her chest representing the spirit, strength an dignity of the resistance movement. Her specific posture, turning her head away in left profile, staring resolutely over her shoulder and corssing her arm across her body is a deliberate depiction of defiance against the Nazi occupation.
Rather than an aggressive battlefield pose, she is depicted with a calm, yet unshakeable attitude, symbolising the stealth, patience and dignity required of clandestine underground networks.
The use of a female figure also subtly highlights the massive contribution of women to the underground networks.
It is crafted frombronzeand has a diameter of 35mm with the length including the ribbon of 85mm. The medal features a ribbon in black with red stripes and green edges
In very good condition. I havent polished the bronze but it could be cleaned further.
