Jan van Kessel painted various species of beetles, flies and butterflies near a twig of white currants with almost scientific accuracy. His images were inspired by scientific insect books and by studying the creatures themselves. This painting testifies to the curiosity, discovery, amazement and collection that gave rise to many art and curiosity cabinets of that time.
